Sea Turtles in Cancún
Hi my name is Kenny Clarke and I am one of the co-founders of TRTL Ties. I would love five minutes of your time to introduce myself. I know that your time is precious and so I tried to keep this short!
Wildlife has always been a passion of mine. Growing up in Southern California, I definitely learned to enjoy the outdoors. I would go on hikes with my dad most weekends. My dad loves animals and plants and he can literally tell you something about everything we would pass by on our trails.
Fast forward a few years and my wife and I are on our honeymoon in Cancun. We pretty much spent all of our time on the beautiful beaches. Our favorite experience was taking the ferry to an island called Isla Mujeres. We sat on the top deck of the ferry and traveled across a beautiful, blue, and clear ocean. We were entertained by a man playing all of the popular songs on his saxophone. I was devastated that I did not have any cash to leave him a tip. We were actually living our best life.
After each day on the beach, we would walk back to the resort and always pass by this gated enclosure on the sand. Both of us were from Southern California and had never seen something like this. It literally looked like normal sand surrounded by gates. There was a sign on the gate that stated that it was protecting sea turtles eggs.
We learned that during the months of May and September, Sea Turtles would come on shore to lay their eggs and “The Sea Turtle Protection and Management Program,” would relocate eggs away from any type of danger. After about 50-60 days, the hatchlings would make their trek to the ocean, where volunteers could give aid if needed.
What an amazing program. The Sea Turtle Protection and Management Program protects four out of the seven types of sea turtles: the Green Sea Turtle, the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, the Hawksbill Sea Turtle, and the Leatherback Sea Turtle. I guess Sea Turtles like Cancun as much as we do. I don’t blame them! It was one of the highlights of our honeymoon to learn about these types of programs.
This was the beginning of my passion of the protection of Sea Turtles. My passion grows each day that I continue to learn about the value sea turtles bring into the world and the many ways we can help protect them. My goal now is to educate others on amazing programs like the one we found in Cancún and allow people to get involved in a very easy and simple way.
Thank you for your time.
